Being an athlete
Being an athlete has shaped the person I am and the way I approach life + business. As I'm sure any athlete will tell you, the hard work happens behind the scenes - the 6am middle of winter practices, the off-season workouts, the extra swings, and the 'can you stay a few minutes and hit me some fly balls?' are what made the difference in my softball career. Similar to the concept of 'build in public' it is not about the sexy final product - the big hit, play in the field, or the beatiful product shot, it is about the work that goes on 'off the field.'
Playing a sport where the best of the best are successful ~33% of the time taught me things will not go my way every time. There will many things that don’t go as planned- brushing that off, appreciating the wins + moving on to the next 'at bat' is a mind set I have carried with me throughout my career and especially now as a small business owner.
I love being part of a team - many of my teammates from past sports teams (and work teams) are my life long friends. I am energized by my teammates and appreciate the 'together' experience of being part of something bigger than myself. Starting a business can sometimes be lonely - there are days I am heads down writing or working through expenses and I miss the human interaction. It makes the business/networking/friendship interactions more special (and appreciated so thank you), and gets me excited to build a team at The Mustache Cat!
