Where do we get our products?

Where do we get our stuff?

  • Estate Sales - I LOVE a good estate sale. These are probably my favorite places to ‘pick’ as you really get a feel for the people and story behind the stuff.  Our homes are such a reflection of who we are, and who others think we are (I went to an estate sale for a violin player from the Saint Paul orchestra - there was an entire room devoted to all the violin garb he had been gifted over the years). Estate sales typically run 3-4 days over the weekend, and often provide discounted pricing on the last day of the sale.

  • Thrift Stores - I try to thrift weekly, and prefer early in the week.  It feels like shelves are freshly stocked post weekend donations, and there are typically no other in person sales Monday-Wednesday.  I google ‘thrift stores’ near me if I’m in an unfamiliar spot, and try to stop while running other errands.  Last week, I stopped at a thrift store after visiting a friend in another state.

  • Facebook Marketplace - an online marketplace people utilize to sell or re-home their stuff.  This can be a space for resellers as well, so additional research or knowledge on pricing is key here.  I like that you can see who you’re buying from and rate sellers after purchase - makes these interactions feel safe and less anonymous.

  • Auctions - many auctions or even estate sales have moved online in recent years, and they can be a great way to look at a lot of product from the comfort of your couch.  Sometimes auctions sell items as part of a ‘lot’ which may include items that share a theme or many of one particular item - I recently purchased a ‘lot’ of vintage clocks!

  • Garage Sales/Yard Sales - often less obviously advertised, garage/yard sales can be a great place for vintage items.  These may feel like more of a treasure hunt as they include lots of variation in items, but pricing is often the most competitive (since overhead is considerably low).  I keep my eyes peeled for these sales when I’m out picking other items or on a separate mission (often for a weekend bagel/coffee).  It may soon be time for an ‘I brake for yard sales’ bumper sticker for my car.

  • Networking  - those of us that like old stuff love the thrill of finding that special piece and are often more than willing to share where we got that unique item or our favorite spots to pick.  I ask folks I buy from regularly where they find their pieces, and often garner new ideas or contacts.
